Science Teacher Tara Henderson Recognized with 2025 National Junior Science and Humanities Teacher Award

Saint Ignatius High School is proud to celebrate Ms. Tara Henderson, who has been named one of only ten recipients nationwide of the 2025 Junior Science and Humanities Teacher Award. This prestigious honor, funded by the U.S. Office of the Secretary of Defense along with the U.S. Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, recognizes high school educators who demonstrate excellence in encouraging the study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Each award recipient is honored with a $1,000 prize in recognition of their dedication and impact.

Ms. Henderson was nominated for this award by Carmen Dixon, Regional Director for the Ohio Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS). In her nomination, Dixon highlighted Ms. Henderson’s outstanding contributions to the field of science education over her 19 years at Saint Ignatius:

“Over the past 19 years at Saint Ignatius High School, Ms. Henderson has exemplified the very spirit of the teaching award through her relentless dedication to science education, innovation in teaching, and unwavering commitment to her students' success. Ms. Henderson inspires excellence and fosters a passion for learning by empowering her students to become future leaders in the sciences.”

As a teacher of Honors and AP Biology, Ms. Henderson is known for bringing her subject to life through a philosophy that blends rigor, creativity, and compassion. Additionally, as moderator of the Health Sciences Program and the Pre-Med Society at Saint Ignatius, Ms. Henderson has built a strong platform for students interested in the medical field. Through these initiatives, students have gained practical experience, developed a sense of vocation, and taken important steps toward careers in healthcare and science.

The JSHS Teacher Award celebrates educators like Ms. Henderson who make an immeasurable impact on future scientific talent. Saint Ignatius is deeply grateful for her commitment to forming young men who are intellectually competent, open to growth, and dedicated to the service of others.
