A Career For The Record Books: Maxwell Friedrich '26
A Career For The Record Books
Every era has its defining athlete. For Saint Ignatius Cross Country and Track, Maxwell Friedrich became that name.

Saint Ignatius High School’s cross country and track program has a rich history, but senior Maxwell Friedrich stands out as a uniquely accomplished student-athlete. Maxwell’s achievements have redefined the school’s records and cemented his place in its legacy.
“I have been running my whole life, since kindergarten, but my career took off during my sophomore year,” reflects Maxwell. “I split the school record in the mile, and everything sort of started to click from there.”
Maxwell is the school record holder in the 1600m (4:08.94), 1 Mile (4:08.60), 3200m (8:55.13), and 5000m (14:53.70). The senior has broken long-standing records held by Athletic Hall of Fame member Marc Sylvester ’01.

Sylvester has continued to stay involved with the program since graduating, following the progress of runners like Maxwell. “I was first introduced to Maxwell through Mike Strauss ’87, who coached me when I was a student. We have had some communication the past two years, but my biggest advice to him is to celebrate each day and time he gets to wear that uniform,” says Sylvester. “When you put on that Ignatius uniform, in any sport, you represent something bigger than yourself. You are honoring God for the gifts he has bestowed on you. You can tell that the young man has a great head on his shoulders and takes each race as an opportunity to grow in the sport and to learn.”
Maxwell’s openness to coaching has been essential to his success. Head Track and Field and Cross Country Coach Bob Wolf ’08 recognizes how Friedrich’s willingness to trust the staff, especially coaches Danny Desmond and Nick Saul ’19, has allowed him to both elevate his performance and influence the program. Wolf notes, “He is a complete student of the game and has brought a distinctive energy to distance running. He has left a lasting impact on this program and brought swagger to our sport.
Maxwell was named “2026 John J. Wirtz Athlete of the Year” and will continue his academic and running career at Georgetown University. As he prepares to compete at the next level, Friedrich is targeting the sub-four-minute mile. “At Georgetown, I am going to focus on the little things,” he says. “I am looking forward to working alongside top-notch athletes from across the country.”
