We proudly recognize 29 members of the senior class who were named National Merit Scholars for the 2020-2021 school year. Of those, 12 students are named National Merit Semifinalists, 16 are named Commended Scholars and one was named a College Board National Recognition Program Scholar. Together they are among those who earned the highest scores on the 2019 PSAT.
Twenty-seven of this year’s National Merit Scholars are also Ignatian Scholars. Ignatian Scholars are defined as students who score 93 or higher on our Merit Scholarship Test. Eighth grade students scoring a 93-96 on our Merit Scholarship Test receive a $3,000 scholarship annually, and students who score a 97-99 receive a $6,000 merit scholarship annually. These 27 National Merit Scholars have collectively earned $480,000 towards their Saint Ignatius education throughout their four years of high school.
These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered in spring 2021.
The National Merit/Ignatian Scholar connection has proven to be consistent throughout the past several years. Last year, 21 of our 24 National Merit Scholars were also Ignatian Scholars. The 2019 Scholars collectively earned $372,000 toward their Saint Ignatius education and acquired an impressive $2,403,320 worth of scholarships at their four-year colleges and universities.
