"Almost, Maine" Absolutely a Hit

Congratulations to the cast and crew of "Almost, Maine" on their three weekend performances! "Almost, Maine" is the most-produced play in American high schools including neighboring schools Walsh Jesuit and St. Edward High School.
Students took the stage on Friday night ready to share the story they had all come to know so well during the weeks of rehearsal leading up to the opening of this year's fall play Almost, Maine. More than 40 students were involved with the production from cast to crew. Our Technical Theater Mentorship program included Saint Ignatius students working alongside girls from area high schools under the direction of progessional mentors to design the set, manage the stage, and work on lights, sound, wardrobe and props. Included in that stage design was a synthetic ice rink. The ice skating finale actually included two students skating on synthetic ice that was installed on the stage as snow fell from overhead. They received actual skating instruction from English faculty member and skating coach Miss Alexandria Miranda.

Almost, Maine is a set of nine short playlets set in the remote and mythical almost-town of, well, Almost, Maine. These playlets, both comedic and tragic, explore love and loss in a way that pulls a chuckle and a sniffle out of the most hardened of hearts. The critically acclaimed play written by John Cariani featured a cast of 18 young performers from the Saint Ignatius Harlequins.

The best plays are a reflection of life, the world outside your window. They exist as a reminder that, no matter what you’ve been through – whatever you’re going through – you’re not alone. Someone, somewhere, understands. - David Hoover '03, director and Fine Arts faculty member

When asked about a moment of note for director David Hoover '03, he recalls, "A student of mine came up the me after one of the performances and said, 'Mr. Hoover, I don't normally like theater, but I really had a great time tonight.'" There is no doubt the students in this production worked very hard but knowing the amount of joy they found through the performances is what means most to Hoover. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew:
