Saint Ignatius High School

Etymology Word of the Week

As some of you know, in addition to being the Director of Admissions, Pat O'Rourke '90 also teaches Latin at Saint Ignatius and is a self-proclaimed "word nerd." Here is his latest Etymology Word of the Week.
Admire - "to regard with wonder, pleasure, or approval" from the Latin preposition ad meaning "to, with regard to" and the Latin deponent verb miror, mirari, miratus meaning "to wonder, be amazed" (All information is from www.wikipedia.org, www.etymonline.com and/or www.dictionary.com).

RELATED WORDS/PHRASES – miracle, mirror, mirage; BUT NOT admiral

Sample sentence – “If someone accuses you of being part of a ‘mutual admiration society,’ that is not a good thing."
