The Welsh Academy, eighth-grader Angel Negron-Rodriguez has found a place where he thrives academically, socially, and spiritually. Coming from a public school background, Angel quickly adapted to the structure and rigorous curriculum at The Welsh Academy. “The best part about being here is the community,” he says. “At this school, you spend three years with the same classmates, so you really form a bond with them.”
Angel’s transition to The Welsh Academy was made easier by the encouragement he received from his teachers and family. “Teachers at my old school recommended The Welsh Academy to my parents, and they thought I’d be a good fit here,” he explains. Angel’s younger brother, Misael, is now a sixth-grade student at the Welsh Academy, as well. Reflecting on his time at The Welsh Academy, Angel adds, “It’s the best decision I’ve ever made.”
One of Angel’s favorite subjects is Theology, where he feels deeply connected to both the lessons and his teacher, Ms. Conway. “Theology helps you become a better person, not just learn about God,” he says. Angel’s mother, Michelle Rodriguez-Martinez, has seen the positive impact the school has had on her son, especially in nurturing his leadership skills. “The Welsh Academy has helped Angel come out of his shell,” she shares. “Having Theology class and service opportunities has been amazing. Angel has developed a passion for leadership and helping others,” she adds.
Outside of academics, Angel is passionate about baseball and hopes to continue playing in high school. He also looks forward to pursuing his love for art and engaging in service opportunities at Saint Ignatius. “The Welsh Academy has helped me focus on how to help others,” he says.
As he continues to grow, Angel is committed to maintaining the skills and relationships he has gained at The Welsh Academy, and he’s excited to face challenges and embrace new opportunities in high school.
