Saint Ignatius High School

Two Titles Cap Impressive Year in Athletics

On the last weekend of the spring season, Saint Ignatius Rugby and Volleyball won state championships, while Lacrosse earned a second-consecutive runner-up finish. On the year, Saint Ignatius teams claimed four state championships and three runner-up banners.

For Saint Ignatius fans, the 2016-2017 year will go down as one of the most successful in the school's athletic history.

The Wildcats won four state championships for the second consecutive academic year, capped off by a thrilling weekend that bore two titles and a runner-up trophy for the blue and gold.

On June 3, the Rugby Cats captured the 2017 RugbyOhio Championship, defeating St. Edward, 17-7. The Lax Cats fell to Archbishop Moeller in the inaugural OHSAA State Tournament Championship later in the evening, 8-7, in double overtime, but the weekend ended with another championship. Coach Casey Marcelo's Volleyball Cats captured the first championship in program history, claiming the OHSBVA crown on Sunday, June 3, with a 3-0 sweep of Hilliard Darby.

Earlier in the year the Soccer Cats, led by Head Coach Mike McLaughlin '85, became the first Ohio boys soccer squad to win back-to-back-to-back state titles, defeating St. Charles at MAPFRE Stadium in Columbus. The winter season also brought triumph, as the Ice Cats won their second title in as many years under Head Coach Pat O'Rourke '90.

Three more banners will be added to the walls of Sullivan Gym, too, with the football, swimming & diving, and lacrosse squads finishing as runner-ups.

That all adds up to quite a year for the Wildcats. Congrats to the Cats on a great year! For more athletic news and updates, visit ignatiuswildcats.com.
