Saint Ignatius High School

Black History Month 2021

During the month of February, Saint Ignatius High School will host events to celebrate Black History Month.
February is recognized nationally as Black History Month, a time to focus particular attention on the historical contributions of African Americans. Since 2016, the Black History Planning Committee at Saint Ignatius High School has come together to organize events to celebrate this month with our entire school community. These events are designed to offer an immersion in African American culture through history, food, art and music.

The month of activities begins on February 5 with our Black History Night Basketball game: Varsity vs. St. Edward High School. At halftime we will recognize Rev. Raymond P. Guiao, S.J. '82, President of Saint Ignatius High School, as the 2021 Trailblazer Award Winner. This honor recognizes Saint Ignatius alumni of color who have made history, forging new ground as innovators and pioneers both at Saint Ignatius and beyond. We encourage you to watch the game and ceremony on SIBN.

In addition to the events and activities planned by the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, The Saint Ignatius History Department will be hosting a competition for students to populate a timeline of Black History in America. Students will be encouraged to compile a visual representation of a significant event in Black History in America, outlining the trials and tribulations of African Americans form the arrival of enslaved Africans to the events of our current time.

After a student participates in one of the Cultural Celebrations for Black History Month, we encourage them to complete the exit ticket to be entered into a raffle for the month. All students who complete the exit ticket will be entered in a raffle to win Wildcard Cash. Please note that each activity must be tracked individually for the month.
