Artists Honored with Regional Awards

Fourteen Saint Ignatius students were recently announced as winners of Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, a nearly 100-year-old competition that recognizes the best in student artwork. Junior Andrew Boeckman led all recipients with three awards.

From freshmen through seniors, Saint Ignatius High School has some phenomenal young artists. This was made evident again this year when 14 students had their artwork recognized through the 97th Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
 
Junior Andrew Boeckman and Joseph Richmond led the way with three awards apiece. Four students received Silver Key recognition this year: Gavin Kuznik ’21, Cameron Quesea ’21, Joseph Richmond ’21, and Cole Strand ’23.
 
Receiving honorable mention were: Andrew Boeckman '21, Luke Bracken ’23, Andrew, Enright '22, Everett-Alan Hood ’21, Sonny Jenkins ’23, Colin MacMillan '21, Adam Price ’20, Cameron Quesea '21, Joseph Richmond ’21, Jim Slife '21, Jack Schilens ’20 and Michael Zwissler ’20.
 
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards recognize student achievement in the visual and literary arts in 29 categories, including editorial cartoon, poetry, graphic design, fashion, science fiction, video game design and more. Since the program’s founding in 1923, the Awards have fostered the creativity and talent of millions of students, including renowned alumni who have gone on to become leaders in their fields, including Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Charles White, Philip Pearlstein, Sylvia Plath, Kay WalkingStick, Luis JimĂ©nez, Ken Burns, Stephen King, Lena Dunham, Richard Linklater, and Zac Posen.
 
Saint Ignatius students have excelled in the competition for many years, including six students who earned National Medals in the past eight years.
 
Zach Valletta '13, Liam Jenkins '16, Edward Kilarsky '17, William Deucher '18, Nicholas Cucci '18 and Aidan Meaney ’19 each achieved the rare honor. Last year, Meaney also had one of his pieces exhibited selected from 60,000 portfolios to be highlighted in the 2018-2019 AP Studio Art Exhibit.
