Joe Denk '07
Fairview Park, Ohio
Time as a Student:
For Joe Denk, his growth and transformation from timid freshman to confident senior was profound. “As a freshman, I was afraid to put myself out there, like I had these big shoes to fill. By senior year, I had a job at Malley’s, was a starter on the rugby team, and felt like I had found my place in the school.” Joe describes himself as a “dabbler,” trying out a bit of everything: Rugby, Labre, the Journey retreat, and the St. Joseph of Arimathea Pallbearers Society. Along the way, he met classmates and faculty who shaped his character and sense of discipline.
In the classroom, Mr. Jerry DeCarlo’s physics class changed how Joe saw math and science - applying real-world examples that stuck with him into college. “He made a complicated subject feel doable. I got A’s in college physics thanks to him.” And with Mr. Tom Healey, it was about more than academics. “He treated us like men,” Joe said. “He made you want to show up and learn.”
Professional Career:
Joe’s love for the weight room started at Saint Ignatius, and it never left. “Life throws a lot at you that you can’t control. But in the weight room, effort counts. Can I be proud of what I did today? That’s the question I always come back to.”
After his graduation at the University of Dayton, Joe got certified at Adrenaline Sports and Fitness in Cincinnati and began his career training everyone from young athletes to professionals. After a few moves, Joe took a leap of faith and accepted a job at Brophy College Preparatory, a Jesuit school in Phoenix. What started as a conversation turned into a decade-long career as Director of Strength and Conditioning, Department Chair, and health & fitness teacher.
It was there that he experienced one of his most meaningful professional moments: speaking on a Kairos retreat in Sedona. Years later, a student handed him a letter, saying Joe’s talk had changed his life. “That retreat... I didn’t prepare anything. I just spoke from the heart. It was one of the most powerful moments of my career.”
While on a separate retreat in 2022, Joe met Saint Ignatius Principal, Dr. Anthony Fior ‘02, and they quickly connected over their time at W. 30th & Lorain. Joe followed up with an email to Fior saying, “I love Ignatius. Keep me in mind for any future opportunities.” In May of 2025, he returned home to serve as Director of Strength and Conditioning at his alma mater.
Today, Joe leads the school’s strength program with the support of assistants Aaron Leovic and Nolan Michaels, whom he calls “future stars.” Whether he’s designing workouts, training alongside students, or strategizing with coaches, Joe sees his role as deeply tied to the school’s Jesuit mission. “This job is about more than sports. It’s about helping young men grow in confidence and resilience, and applying those lessons to every area of life.”
Advice to Current Students:
“Don’t be afraid to fail. Seek out the uncomfortable things.” Looking back, he remembers times when he talked himself out of trying something new, convincing himself it wouldn’t work. “You create these hypothetical failures in your head, but the truth is, it’s never as scary as you think.”
Whether it’s in the gym or in life, Joe wants students to know that growth happens through challenge. “Put your best foot forward. Show up, do the work, and be proud of your effort. That’s how you become the man you’re meant to be.
