Ignatian Pedagogy in Practice:
A Forum for Educators in Jesuit Schools

Ignatian Pedagogy in Practice: A Forum for Educators in Jesuit Schools is an annual periodical that aims to foster research-informed dialogue and inquiry around key issues facing Jesuit educators in 21st-century education. We welcome pieces from classroom teachers and researchers whose perspectives help to deepen our understanding of the values of Jesuit education and elevate practices related to teaching and learning.

Our fall 2026 issue will explore the theme of innovation in the modern era of Jesuit education. We invite submissions that explore a range of perspectives and contexts related to this theme. For more information, please see the call for papers below.

Issue 2 – Fall 2025
“Unique Approaches to Feedback in Ignatian Pedagogy”

Our second issue explores unique approaches to feedback in the Ignatian tradition. Arguably, feedback is one of the most well-researched and pivotal elements of effective classroom instruction. This issue of Ignatian Pedagogy in Practice invites educators to explore, articulate, and/or propose unique perspectives on feedback and its role in Jesuit education. Despite the abundance of research on feedback, little research has focused explicitly on crafting effective feedback for students that embodies Ignatian pedagogical ideals or aligns closely with the mission of Jesuit schools. Moreover, there is a need for more research that articulates how the IPP—Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm—might be used as a framework for informing feedback strategies for teachers in Jesuit schools. This issue of Ignatian Pedagogy in Practice aims to fill that gap.

Issue 1 – Fall 2024
“Reimagining Rigor: Elevating Learning in the 21st-Century”

Our inaugural issue focuses on the theme of “reimagining rigor.” The idea of rigor has a complex history across Jesuit schools and, in the 21st century, has evolved well beyond typical assumptions about what rigor can or should look like. This issue of Ignatian Pedagogy in Practice invites educators to reimagine how we define rigor in Jesuit school contexts, particularly in the face of a quickly evolving landscape for educating students.

Issue 3 – Forthcoming Fall 2026
“Innovating Tradition: Ignatian Pedagogy for the Modern Era”

Jesuit schools today shepherd an almost 500-year-old tradition of whole person formation for the greater glory of God. Two seemingly paradoxical and yet necessarily co-existent characteristics of Jesuit education are its orientation toward tradition and desire to remain adaptable and flexible amid the rapidly evolving dynamics of a complex world. From the Ratio Studiorum to Kolvenbach’s Characteristics of Jesuit Education and Ignatian Pedagogy: A Practical Approach, the duality of tradition and innovation in Jesuit education remains a pervasive call within our mission.

In 2019, The International Commission on the Apostolate of Jesuit Education (ICAJE) and the Society of Jesus published Jesuit Schools: A Living Tradition in the 21st Century—An Ongoing Exercise of Discernment. In its introductory letter, Superior General Arturo Sosa identifies the following purpose:

[To assist] our educational apostolate in reflecting and discerning the particular challenges and opportunities of our time. [This document] continues the necessary process of renewal, innovation and reimagination that our education requires during this change of epoch that we experience today. The best tribute that we can offer to our long tradition in education is to explore new models, creative and imaginative ways to offer our spiritual vision and educational experience to our students and their families. Thus, the title of the document reflects well its purpose: to renew our living tradition in education as an ongoing exercise of discernment.

This issue of Ignatian Pedagogy in Practice invites submissions that articulate innovative, practical approaches to our educational mission that fulfill the invitation articulated by A Living Tradition. How do we pay tribute to our educational mission’s sacred tradition by exploring new models and imaginative educational experiences that respond to the call of the times while also renewing our living tradition?
