Grade School Chinese Program

2017 Session: Saturdays from March 18 to April 8, 2:15 - 3:15 p.m. Click here to register

The Saint Ignatius High School Grade School Chinese Program is a free program designed to give sixth, seventh and eighth graders exposure to the Chinese language and the Mandarin-speaking cultures of its nearly 900 million speakers all over the world. The program runs for four consecutive Saturdays and is held for one hour (2:15 p.m. until 3:15 p.m.). Each one hour sessions consists of twenty minutes of instruction by a faculty member, twenty minutes of interactive activities, and a twenty minute exploration of a Chinese culture.

No previous knowledge is required, just a desire to learn more about the world! Students will be introduced to key expressions in Chinese authentic resources and interactive digital technologies. Each week will feature a different communicative function such as greetings and counting (Week 1), writing and typing Chinese characters (Week 2), polite daily expressions (Week 3), and discussing likes and dislikes (Week 4). Each week students will also explore a different Chinese culture theme through playing games, including abacus, tangram, paper-cutting, and zodiac animals.
