A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS GOES OUT TO: Saint Ignatius' standout sophomore tennis player Nate Griffin, who split his two matches during Friday's 94th annual Boys State Tennis Tournament. Rain forced the tournament to be moved from the varsity tennis courts at The Ohio State University to the indoor Elysium Tennis Center in Plain City. Nate defeated Miguel Cepeda of Mason, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, but was defeated in the quarterfinals by Stuart Little of Upper Arlington, 6-3, 6-0. Nate was making his second consecutive state quarterfinal appearance. Again we tip the corner's cap to Nate, his family, Coach Jon Barker and the entire Saint Ignatius tennis program.

Posted by John Fanta '13 and Presented by Head Varsity Tennis Coach Jon Barker '87 Early on in the season, the Saint Ignatius Tennis squad is going through a bit of a bumpy road, like many high school teams in any sport. Learning the chemistry in everything that is going on in a jam-packed schedule can be tough. Coach Jon Barker likes the direction of his team, though, and knows that the sky is the limit for them. Friday, the Wildcats went to Highland for a team tournament, and they were ready for the weekend. They knocked of Highland 5-0. Junior Jack Napoli filled in for the ill Karl Fehn, and Jack stepped up very strongly. He was put in a tough role as the Wildcats were missing Karl, but Jack stepped in very strongly. On Saturday, down two regular starters, the Wildcats fought to the very end with St. Xavier in Lexington, Ohio. The second doubles team of Bobby Kirchner and Nick Siciliano rolled their opponents in straight sets, and sophomore Nate Griffin outlasted a tough senior in the number one slot, defeating him 7-5 in the third set. Unfortunately, we fell 2-3 to the Bombers, but the team is learning in the early season, and is getting better every step of the way. On Tuesday, the 'Cats take the road for a match. Wednesday, they are at home (Magnificat Courts) for match play against the Shormen of Avon Lake.

Posted by John Fanta '13 Coach Jon Barker's Wildcat Tennis Team took to the courts for the prestigious St. Edward Invitational. They were tough throughout the day, as seniors Nick Siciliano and Sean Frebes led the forefront in the doubles competition and junior Christian Zuber was a force in the singles. The Wildcats' leader was Nate Griffin, who battled all the way to the singles final. In the eight-team invitational, the 'Cats battled to a second place finish in the eight-team field. They finished with 26 points, behind the champion Toledo Saint John (42.5 points). It was a day of racquet duels, as the Wildcats' Nate Griffin led the efforts for Saint Ignatius. He met a rival that he is very familiar with, Walsh Jesuit's Aaron Sandberg. Griffin won a match in the state tournament last year, while Sandberg was a Divsion I state qualifier. In the invitational's first singles title, the two duked it out in the final. Sandberg took down Griffin in two sets (6-0, 6-2). Griffin fought in the second set, but it was Sandberg who triumphed to win the singles championship. Junior Christian Zuber was a third-place finisher in singles, and the doubles team of Nick Siciliano and Sean Frebes placed third in the invitational. Next up: The Wildcat Tennis team travels to Lexington HS for a challenging road match on Monday (4/8).

Saint Ignatius' 2013 Varsity Tennis Preview
4/3/2013
| The deep, flexible and big-match tested Wildcats are set to open their season at Hawken School on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Saint Ignatius' tennis outlook is courtesy of head coach Jon Barker '87 and posted by Eddie Dwyer. FROM COACH BARKER "I'm pretty excited about the upcoming season. We have six of our seven starters returning and I think we'll have our strongest team in years. "To help everyone reach his potential, we have put together what is probably the toughest schedule in our team history. We're playing a schedule stacked with the best teams in Northeast Ohio and even some from farther away, including St. Xavier and Lexington. We may take some lumps throughout the season, but the guys will definitely be match tough by the end-of-the-year tournaments. "Last year's freshman phenom, Nate Griffin, is back at the number one spot. Nate made it down to the State Tournament last year and advanced to the quarterfinal round before losing to the eventual state runner-up. Nate's competition this year is fierce, as nearly every team we face this srping has an ace number one player. Obviously, Nate will be looking to improve on last year's performance throughout the season and at the tournament. "We lost one starting senior from last year, but we have a number of talented guys looking to fill that spot. The core of the team, including seniors Bob Kirchner, Sean Frebes and Nick Siciliano, juniors Christian Zuber, Yaw Boakyeand Jack Napoli, and sophomore Karl Fehn, have all improved in the off-season and make this the deepest, most talented squad I've coached. We have a lot of lineup flexibility, which can be a challenge, but obviously it's a nice problem to have. "Bobby Kirchner has developed into something of a doubles specialist over his four years and it's nice to have a solid upperclassman locked in to one of our doubles spots. After Bobby, though, the possibilities are many, because just about everyone is tough in both singles and doubles. "We had more guys try out for the team this year than in quite a few years. As such, and in order to accommodate some of the seniors who wouldn't otherwise crack the varsity lineup, we organized a Varsity B team and schedule. Needless to say, between the Varsity A and B teams and the JV squad, it's going to be a busy and exciting spring." The Saint Ignatius JV tennis team concluded its season today with a canceled match against Western Reserve Academy. Despite having clear skies at the beginning of the match, rain began to fall before victory could be had. The team finished with an astounding 14-1 record, the only loss coming against North Canton Hoover. The team defeated strong teams such as University School, Westlake, and Hudson. The JV team also competed in the Rocky River Invitational, a varsity event. As the season progressed, call ups and injuries on the Varsity team forced the JV team to adjust. Numerous players saw action at different positions. Junior Nick Siciliano played singles and doubles before being called up to the varstiy team. Sophomore Jack Napoli excelled at singles before being called up to varsity. Junior Jerry Zucca was a solid contributor to the team, playing and winning numerous doubles matches. The Sophomore duo of Brad Merk and Curt Ludwig appear poised to be key players in upcoming years. Junior John Gisser was an anchor to the singles lineup, playng matches at 2nd and 3rd singles Freshman Danny Klein became a symbol of consistency at singles. Junior Evan Frost saw action at both singles and doubles, winning a key match against Saint Edward and always keeping things interesting. Sophomores Vince Hwang, Al Zucca, and Alex DiStaulo impressed in exhibition matches. The JV team also saw Varsity players Sean Frebes ('13) and Karl Fehn ('15) play in JV matches due to injuries. The team would like to thank all their fans for their support throughout the season. The players would also like to thank coaches Cindy Reagan, Jon Barker, and Coach "Swagger" McKeever for leading them during the season and taking them to Chipotle.
