1. Academic year
The academic year is divided into four quarters with a final exam period after each semester.
2. Academic Requirements for Graduation
In order to graduate from Saint Ignatius High School, a minimum number of 24.5 credits are required. These include state mandated units as well as additional courses required by the school in particular disciplines. The distribution is as follows:
English 4
Theology 4
Mathematics 3
Foreign Language 3*
Social Studies 3
Science 3
Phys Ed/Health 1
Fine Arts .5
Oral Interpretation .5
Computer Concepts .5
Electives 2
*Must be three years in same foreign language
The school policy pertaining to failures and dismissal states, “A student may be dismissed if he receives three failing semester marks in one academic year or if he accumulates four failing semester marks.”
Credits lost because of failure in any subject area must be made up prior to the next school year. This work must be done in Saint Ignatius summer school programs or approved programs offered in the area school systems. Exceptions may only be granted by the Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs.
3. Theology and Retreat requirement
All students, both Catholic and non-Catholic, are required to fulfill the graduation requirement for Theology and retreats. There are no exceptions.
4. Incoming Freshman/Transfer and
Junior Interview Requirements
All students, before beginning their freshman year (or first year if transferring) and after completing sophomore year and before entering their junior year, must arrange to interview with an assigned faculty member. The student should be accompanied by his parents or legal guardian.
5. Sophomore Service Requirement
Every student, including students transferring in to Saint Ignatius High School at any grade, must take the Sophomore Service course as part of his Theology graduation requirement. When a student takes Sophomore Service during his sophomore year, he will take it one semester, and the other semester he will take the Morality course. Service placement is at the discretion of the school and often requires the student to walk or be driven to his particular service site.
6. Eligibility
Participation in athletics or school extracurricular activities is encouraged by Saint Ignatius High School. However, students are reminded that such participation is a privilege, not a right. A student’s academic welfare takes precedence over his participation in a sport or an activity. The policy is meant to encourage students who are active in a sport or an activity to maintain their academic standings. In addition, all State of Ohio eligibility standards apply.
A. A student shall be ineligible for a minimum of two weeks if at a deficiency period he receives deficiencies with one of the following combinations: 2 or more F’s; 1F and 2 or more D’s; or 4 or more D’s.
B. A student shall be ineligible for a minimum of two weeks if at a quarterly grading period he receives 2 F’s or has a quarterly average of less than 1.7.
C. A student shall be placed on weekly eligibility if at the deficiency period he receives 2 or 3 D deficiencies.
D. A student shall be on weekly eligibility if at the quarterly grading period his quarterly average is between 1.7 – 1.99.
E. Ineligibility runs from Monday to Monday, including two weekends. This ineligibility shall include meetings, tryouts, practices, rehearsals, performances, games and the like.
F. After a student has been ineligible for the two-week period, if he wishes to regain eligibility he must request that the Athletic Director (for athletes) or the Assistant Principal for Student Services (for all others) to place him on the weekly eligibility program until the next grading period or deficiency report.
G. Teachers of students on weekly eligibility will be given progress reports on Friday of each week which are to be returned by the student to the Athletic Director (athletes) or Assistant Principal for Student Services (all others) by 9:00 a.m. on the following Monday (or first school day of the week in case of holidays.)
N.B. A student who fails in any of his obligations for either arranging meetings, attending the Afterschool Program, or attending tutoring sessions arranged by his teacher, counselor, or the Cura Personalis Director will receive the penalty for cutting a class. The student also risks gaining permanent ineligibility due to his lack of concern with fulfilling these obligations. Time spent at jug for these infractions takes away from the Afterschool Program and some tutoring sessions. This lost time must be made up before eligibility will be gained.
