Saint Ignatius High School achieves excellence in athletics

Coach Mike McLaughlin's nationally recognized program won a record fifth state championship by defeating Olentangy Liberty, 4-2, in the title match at Crew Stadium in Columbus. The Wildcats (22-1) advanced to the Division I title match for a record fourth consecutive season. Saint Ignatius has won 45 of its past 46 matches and will enter the 2012 season on a 17-match winning streak.

On the strength of senior Tim Shenk's 32-yard field goal as time expired, the Wildcats defeated West Side rival St. Edward, 20-17, in a Division I, Region 1 semifinal playoff game on November 12. It marked the second victory over the Eagles in 15 days, as Saint Ignatius turned back St. Edward by the same score in Week 10 of the regular season.

Regional Semifinal tickets vs. the Mentor Cardinals are ON SALE at Saint Ignatius this week from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Friday. Please go to the Athletic Ticket Booth from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. or the Athletic Office after 1 p.m. to purchase. The game will be played at Lakewood Stadium on Saturday, November 19. Tickets are $7.

After garnering first place at the Tiffin Regional, Coach Mike Gallagher's Wildcats finished second to Dublin Coffman in the annual OHSAA state meet at the National Trails Raceway in Hebron, Ohio. Junior Jack Miller finished 20th overall at 15:50.89 and senior Mitch Baum was 21st at 15:55.96.

Senior Beau Titsworth ended his outstanding career at Saint  Ignatius by earning co-medalist honors at the OHSAA state tournament in Columbus. The Oklahoma recruit had a two-round total of 150 on the demanding Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University. As a team, the Wildcats finished fifth in Division I with a two-day score of 637.

2011 Winter Baseball Camp

The Saint Ignatius baseball program, under the leadership of Head Coach Brad Ganor, will be sponsoring a Winter Baseball Camp to be held indoors at the Diamond Sports Complex in Westlake. The camp is open for all grade school students in 1st through 8th grades.

On Sunday, December 4, Saint Ignatius will celebrate its 27th annual Christmas Concert performed by The Cleveland Orchestra and Orchestra Chorus at Severance Hall. This year's Magis Award will be presented to Brittan and Fred DiSanto '80.

Nan and Chuck Geschke '56 visit Saint Ignatius

Dr. Chuck Geschke '56 and his wife Nan visited with the Geschke Scholars on October 27. Chuck, co-founder of Adobe Systems, has had a massive impact on the publishing industry and at Saint Ignatius High School. Watch his speech from October 28 at The City Club on YouTube.

In 2002, the couple established the Geshke Family Scholarship which provides assistance every year to eight students, two in each grade.

The Scholars include seniors Nick Smith and Tom Sherman (not pictured), juniors Jake Maier and Sean Bush, sophomores Joe Kooplikkattu and Raphael Dean and freshmen David Blue and Mark Raddell.

 
Alumni SPA Advent Retreat
Advent is from the Latin word adventus which translates into "coming". Is it time for you to come back to your alma mater to Find God in the realities of your busy world?

Designed to be incorporated into daily life and offered to Saint Ignatius High School Alumni only, the Spirituality Program for Adults will offer a one-week retreat during the Advent season.

The Advent retreat will begin with a Mass in St. Mary of the Assumption Chapel on Sunday, November 27 at noon, followed by a presentation and assignments of a personal spiritual director and home prayer suggestions.

The retreat will close with a Mass on Saturday, December 3 at 5 p.m.

With Christmas fast approaching and holiday calendars filling quickly, we would like to share with you our plans for the Christmas celebrations this year.

 

 

 

  • December 3, Noon–2:00 p.m., Arrupe Christmas Party sponsored by the Loyola Society in Rade Dining Hall - The party will serve families with children 10 years old and under who live in and attend school on the Near West Side of Cleveland, surrounding Saint Ignatius.
  • December 4, 4:00–10:00 p.m., Christmas Concert with the Cleveland Orchestra & Chorus at Severance Hall
  • December 11, 7-8:30 p.m., Lessons & Carols at St. Pat's on Bridge performed by the Saint Ignatius High School Men's Chorus
  • December 12, 7-8:30 p.m., Jazz Christmas Concert at The Breen Center for the Performing Arts
  • December 14, 7-8:30 p.m., Symphonic Band Christmas Concert at The Breen Center for the Performing Arts

Look who's been on campus...

Author of Cleveland Rock and Roll Memories Carlo Wolff spoke to the students during English week.

Dr. Persaud with the help of Lifeworks Ohio was on campus promoting a culture of life with emphasis on the issue of embryonic stem cell research.

 

 
Alumni Memorial Mass

Saint Ignatius High School celebrated its annual Alumni and Friends Memorial Mass to pray for those who have passed.

Joined by the school chorus and Pallbearer Society, the Ignatius Community celebrated the Eucharist at this special time of the year.

Saint Ignatius Hockey at Progressive Field

The Cleveland Indians announced this week that the Saint Ignatius Wildcats will play 5 games this winter at Progressive Field as a part of the Indians' popular "Snow Days" promotion.

The Cats will play in a Gilmour Tournament at the Pro on the first weekend in December, as well as in a Red North league game on Thursday, January 5th versus Saint Ed's. Ignatius has won three out of the last four Red North division crowns, in addition to 4 out of their last 5 games versus Eds.

Overall, the Wildcats are 8-4 versus the Eagles since 2007-08. Click here for more details about the December tourney.

Travels with the Cat:

Travels with the Cat took place in  Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

Saint Ignatius High School president Fr. Bill Murphy, S.J. shared school news and networked among alumni in both cities.

In the coming weeks, the Alumni Office will travel to Denver, Phoenix, and Indianapolis. Check out the school website for more information.
