The school counseling department cultivates a supportive environment that empowers students to successfully navigate high school by equipping them with the knowledge, confidence, and resources to thrive amid academic, social, and emotional challenges. Our counselors are student advocates committed to supporting, understanding, and nurturing students as they grow to become the person they are called to be. These aims are pursued through the following initiatives:

Student Advocates

Counselors communicate with teachers and parents to promote student well-being. Counselors are the go-to person for students seeking guidance and resources for a myriad of circumstances.

Individual Meetings

Individual meetings foster a stronger understanding of a student’s goals and challenges. Counselors use this understanding to provide individualized support for students to pursue their unique visions of success.

Advisory Lessons

Counselors deliver a social emotional learning (SEL) curriculum to freshman and sophomores in weekly meetings. These lessons promote cura personalis (care for the whole person) by teaching students related skills and building community.

Some topics covered include:
-Advocacy
-Communication
-Sleep Hygiene
-Nutrition
-Stress Management
-Career Exploration
-Mental Health Awarene

Career Exploration

Students can explore careers with their counselor through individual meetings and advisory lessons. These opportunities assist students in understanding their career values, interests, aptitudes.

Mediation Sessions

Counselors facilitate positive peer relations by serving as a neutral mediator in difficult interpersonal circumstances when needed. These sessions help promote a positive campus community where all members feel valued.

Grief Support Group

A support group for students who have lost a loved one from their immediate family. Whether recently or in the past, this group of students come together to support one another through the grieving process. This group is facilitated by Mrs. Melissa Lessick.

Scheduling & Academic Planning

Counselors meet with students during the second semester of each school year to review graduation requirements and discern their course selections for upcoming school year and beyond.

Academic Support Meetings

Students in academic distress are scheduled for an academic support meeting to evaluate progress, obstacles, and to determine a plan of action towards their academic goals.

Crisis Support

For students in severe distress, counselors provide immediate emotional support and collaborate with families and community resources to provide the care the student needs.

Cura Personalis Program

A Latin term meaning "care for the [individual] person," cura personalis is a hallmark of Jesuit education. Each teacher establishes a personal relationship with students, listens to them in the process of teaching, and draws them toward personal initiative and responsibility for learning.

The Cura Personalis Program assists students who have mild learning differences. Some students may need tutoring, structured study time, assistance provided by our Walton Center for Learning, and possible extended time for test taking.

In order for students to receive these services, as well as accommodations for standardized tests such as the PSAT, SAT, ACT or Advanced Placement Testing, detailed documentation showing the need for accommodations is required.

Please contact the School Counseling department with any additional questions.
